The internet is a very cost-effective method of distribution for your final project, whether it had been intended as a Web Video Production or not. But the video must first be optimized for online delivery to ensure a smooth playback, and to minimize your website’s bandwidth costs. This is accomplished through a process known as Encoding.

There are two elements that need to be considered: The required File Format(s), and the Target File Size or Bitrate.

File Format

There are three main video formats currently considered to be ‘standard’ for web delivery: Flash, Quicktime and Windows Media. Each have strengths and weaknesses, but it really comes down to what your target audience is using.

This chart shows which of these formats come pre-installed on Mac and Windows machines, and the overall market penetration of the 3 formats.

Flash has become the format of choice for websites such as YouTube. Although Quicktime offers the highest quality in the smallest file size, it only comes pre-installed on Macs. Windows Media offers a large pre-installed user base, however this comes at the expense of picture and sound quality.

Often a quick conversation with your web designer can greatly aid you in making this decision.

Target File Size or Bitrate

Let’s look at a typical scenario: Your finished video is 5 minutes long. At full resolution (TV quality) your video will be about 900MB – far too large to put online! Ideally, we’d like to get your video closer to 9MB while still maintaining an acceptable level of quality in picture and sound.

The process begins by determining the Target File Size, conforming all other variables to suit. Inversely, a Target Bitrate may be established which is a factor of filesize per second of video. Multiplying this Bitrate by the number of seconds in the video will determine the File Size.

This is where the real work begins, as the Frame Size is first reduced, and the video is compressed.

Frame Size

The first step is to reduce the Frame Size. Full-quality Video is 640×480 pixels. In reducing this to between 320×240 to 480×360 pixels, we can reduce the File Size significantly. In some cases, the required Frame Size will be determined by the website in which the video will be played.

Compression

Powerful Hardware and Software are used to examine each frame of the video, essentially looking for patterns between pixels both within a single frame and between adjacent frames of video. This is accomplished by using a mathematical algorithm known as a CODEC (short for compression/decompression), and through two methods of compression known as Temporal and Spatial. The video is then decompressed by the viewer’s computer after it has been downloaded in its compressed form.

In the Temporal method of compression, the computer is looking for instances where information remains relatively the same over time. For instance, if your video consists of a person standing in front of a simple white wall, the software is able to take a snapshot of the background area and repeat it in subsequent frames (until the background changes significantly).

Spatial Compression seeks patterns within a frame. Again with our white wall as an example, instead of each pixel of white having to be ‘described’ individually, the computer can group these pixels together and call them all ‘white’.

In Summary

This may still all sound a little confusing to you, and that’s okay. We’ll understand if you just want your video to look ‘good’. Contact us and we’ll be more than happy to talk you through it.

When beginning a new Corporate Video Production, there will be two decisions to make with respect to the format of the video. The first is the Frame Rate, and the second is the Aspect Ratio of the image.

Frame Rate

You will have two options from which to choose: ‘30 fps’ and ‘24 fps’. This refers to the number of frames per one second of video, and essentially results in two different ‘looks’ to the video.

‘30 fps’ can be compared to a typical News broadcast. It is what we would consider ‘standard’ video.

‘24 fps’, on the other hand, is equivalent to the frame rate at which both Films and High-Definition Television are captured. This frame-rate has become very popular lately as it tends to lend the video a more cinematic feel, thereby raising the perceived production value. The video is actually only captured at 24 frames per second and then converted to 30 frames per second in-camera, which maintains the same cinematic feel, while eliminating any possible compatibility issues. The effect is entirely subconscious, but very real.

Aspect Ratio

Aspect Ratio is literally the width to height ratio of the video image. The two choices are 4:3, and 16:9 (also referred to as ‘Anamorphic’).

4:3 is the standard aspect ratio which you will recognize from older Televisions. This standard had been adopted to match the aspect ratio which had originally been used by the Film industry in the ‘40s and ‘50s.

But Hollywood changed, and eventually created the widescreen format. It may have taken decades for Television manufacturers to catch up, but Widescreen or 16:9 Televisions are now being manufactured and sold in increasingly higher numbers than traditional 4:3 Televisions.

When a 16:9 DVD is played on an older 4:3 Television, the image will simply be ‘letter-boxed’ – Which means that black bars will be added to the top and bottom. This is done automatically by the DVD player.

By contrast, if a DVD shot in 4:3 is played back on a newer, 16:9 Television, the image will have to be cropped on the top and bottom, stretched horizontally, or will have vertical black bars on the sides.

We Recommend

In order to ‘future-proof’ your video project, we recommend a 16:9 Aspect Ratio at 24 fps for most projects. An exception might be in cases where we are to combine this new footage with footage which has been previously shot in the 4:3 aspect ratio and at a frame rate of 30 fps.

Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by, and normally presented to, an end-user while it is being delivered by a streaming provider (the term “presented” is used in this article in a general sense that includes audio or video playback). The name refers to the delivery method of the medium rather than to the medium itself. The distinction is usually applied to media that are distributed over telecommunications networks, as most other delivery systems are either inherently streaming (e.g. radio, television) or inherently non-streaming (e.g. books, video cassettes, audio CDs). The verb ‘to stream’ is also derived from this term, meaning to deliver media in this manner.

History

Attempts to display media on computers date back to the earliest days of computing, in the mid-20th century. However, little progress was made for several decades, primarily due to the high cost and limited capabilities of computer hardware.

From the late 1980s through the 1990s, consumer-grade personal computers became powerful enough to display various media. The primary technical issues with streaming were:

having enough CPU power and bus bandwidth to support the required data rates

creating low-latency interrupt paths in the OS to prevent buffer underrun[citation needed]

However, computer networks were still limited, and media was usually delivered over non-streaming channels, such as CD-ROMs.

The late 1990s and early 2000s, internet users saw:

greater network bandwidth, especially in the last mile

increased access to networks, especially the Internet

use of standard protocols and formats, such as TCP/IP, HTTP, and HTML

commercialization of the Internet

These advances in computer networking combined with powerful home computers and modern operating systems made streaming media practical and affordable for ordinary consumers. Stand-alone Internet radio devicesare offering listeners a “no-computer” option for listening to audio streams. But it needs further adhoc references to it.

In general, multimedia content is large, so media storage and transmission costs are still significant; to offset this somewhat, media is generally compressed for both storage and streaming.

Increasing consumer demand for streaming of High definition (HD) content to different devices in the home has lead the industry to develop a number of technologies, such as WirelessHD or ITU-T G.hn, which are optimized for streaming of HD content without forcing the user to install new networking cables.

A media stream can be on demand or live. On demand streams are stored on a server for a long period of time, and are available to be transmitted at a user’s request. Live streams are only available at one particular time, as in a video stream of a live sporting event.

Research in streaming and media is ongoing and representative research can be found at the Journal of Multimedia.

Unicast Connections require multiple connections from the same streaming server even when it streams the same content

Streaming media storage size (in the common file system measurements megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and so on) is calculated from streaming bandwidth and length of the media with the following formula (for a single user and file):

storage size (in megabytes) = length (in seconds) * bit rate (in kbit/s) / (8 * 1024)

(since 1 megabyte = 8 * 1024*1024 bits Real world example:

One hour of video encoded at 300 kbit/s (this is a typical broadband video for 2005 and it’s usually encoded in a 320×240 pixels window size) will be:

(3,600 s * 300,000 bit/s) / (8*1024*1024) give around 128 MB of storage

If the file is stored on a server for on-demand streaming and this stream is viewed by 1,000 people at the same time using a Unicast protocol, you would need:

300 kbit/s * 1,000 = 300,000 kbit/s = 300 Mbit/s of bandwidth

This is equivalent to around 125 GiB per hour. Of course, using a Multicast protocol the server sends out only a single stream that is common to all users. Hence, such a stream would only use 300 kbit/s of serving bandwidth. See below for more information on these protocols.

Protocol issues

Designing a network protocol to support streaming media raises many issues, such as:

Datagram protocols, such as the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), send the media stream as a series of small packets. This is simple and efficient; however, there is no mechanism within the protocol to guarantee delivery. It is up to the receiving application to detect loss or corruption and recover data using error correction techniques. If data is lost, the stream may suffer a dropout.

The Real-time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) and the Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP) were specifically designed to stream media over networks. The latter two are built on top of UDP.

Reliable protocols, such as the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), guarantee correct delivery of each bit in the media stream. However, they accomplish this with a system of timeouts and retries, which makes them more complex to implement. It also means that when there is data loss on the network, the media stream stalls while the protocol handlers detect the loss and retransmit the missing data. Clients can minimize the effect of this by buffering data for display. While delay due to buffering is acceptable in video on demand scenarios, users of interactive applications, such as video conferencing, will feel a loss of fidelity, if the delay that buffering contributes to, exceeds 200 ms [1].

Unicast protocols send a separate copy of the media stream from the server to each recipient. Unicast is the norm for most Internet connections, but does not scale well when many users want to view the same program concurrently.

Multicasting broadcasts the same copy of the multimedia over the entire network to all clients

Multicast protocols were developed to reduce the data replication (and consequent server/network loads) that occur when many recipients receive Unicast content streams independently. These protocols send a single stream from the source to a group of recipients. Depending on the network infrastructure and type, Multicast transmission may or may not be feasible. One potential disadvantage of multicasting is the loss of video on demand functionality. Continuous streaming of radio or television material usually precludes the recipient’s ability to control playback. However, this problem can be mitigated by elements such as caching servers, digital set-top boxes, and buffered media players.

IP Multicast provides a means to send a single media stream to a group of recipients on a computer network. One of the challenges in deploying IP multicast is that routers and firewalls between LANs must allow the passage of packets destined to multicast groups. If the organization that is serving the content has control over the network between server and recipients (i.e., educational, government, and corporate intranets), then routing protocols such as IGMP and PIM can be used to deliver stream content to multiple LANsegments.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) protocols arrange for prerecorded streams to be sent between computers. This prevents the server and its network connections from becoming a bottleneck. However, it raises technical, performance, quality, business, and legal issues.

1. How do you see email as a marketing tool? Do you see it as a different audience than your blog readers, an extension, or something else?

“An email can have such an impact. It’s like calling an old friend every few months to catch up.”
There’s some crossover between our blog and newsletter, but there are a lot of people who subscribe to the newsletter that don’t read our blog. It’s easy to think everyone reads your blog, but most people are way too busy to be a regular reader.

That’s why an email can have such an impact. It reaches interested people who aren’t paying attention all the time. It’s like calling an old friend every few months to catch up.

2. What motivated you to make the switch from plain text to HTML?

A couple things.

We wanted to track how many people were opening the email and clicking the links.
Using simple design and color to call out more important parts of the newsletter.
Even though we’re going HTML, it’s still mostly text. The color and simple styling really helps make the point without having to get too fancy.

3. Have you seen an improvement in the traffic to your site or received any feedback since the switch?

We didn’t really track newsletter results before, but it definitely feels like we’re seeing great results. We usually include a coupon with the newsletters and we’re seeing a nice uptake.

4. You guys typically design for the browser, how did you find designing HTML emails?

A pain in the ass, honestly. It’s like designing web sites that have to work on 10 different browsers. HTML email display in mail clients feels like the mid 90s. They have a long way to go to embrace modern standards.

5. How do you decide what to put in your newsletters?

We usually go back through a month’s worth of blog posts and pick out the ones we thought were most interesting. The more comments the better. We also announce a couple recent new features in our products and often include a coupon for a few bucks off a product. We try not to make the newsletters too long, so brevity is considered. We also use a URL shortening tool (like TinyURL) to keep the URLs from wrapping.

6. Do you and your team subscribe to many email newsletters yourselves?

I like Mark Hurst’s Good Experience newsletter (also sent with Campaign Monitor). I think that may be the only one I’m consciously subscribed to. Unfortunately I get a lot of other ones I don’t remember asking for

7. Why did you choose to use an external service to send your newsletters?

“We looked around and tried a few, but nothing held a candle to Campaign Monitor. It is truly elegant, useful, and valuable.”
A long time ago we used to do this ourselves, but we didn’t really have a good way of managing the list. We could blast one out, but we didn’t really know who was on it, we couldn’t send multi-part emails, we couldn’t deal with bounces, etc.

As our lists grew (we have over 100,000 on one product list) we needed something to manage this process. We looked around and tried a few, but nothing held a candle to Campaign Monitor. It is truly elegant, useful, and valuable. We’re proud to use it and thank you for creating it.

Recent 37signals newsletters

Not surprisingly, the 37signals newsletters are a great example of simple, effective HTML email design. Each issue is predominantly text and smart formatting through inline CSS make them a pleasure to read in every email client.

You probably don’t ever think about things like fully redundant servers, enterprise class delivery engines and in-house deliverability expertise, right? Luckily for you, our developers can’t get enough of it. All you need to know is, we’ve got you covered.

Maintaining a good sender reputation

Today, the most important factor in the delivery of your email is your sender reputation. If ISP’s don’t know you or don’t like what you’re sending, you won’t be invited back. We’re constantly working to ensure you can piggyback off our great reputation and give your campaigns the best chance of reaching the inbox.

Human approval process

Before they can send a single campaign, every new customer is reviewed by our team to ensure they meet our comprehensive criteria covering permission, email content, privacy and much more.

ISP feedback loop integration

Campaign Monitor is integrated into the feedback loop of ISP’s like Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL. We can detect if a subscriber marks you as spam, and remove them from your list automatically.

Email authentication

Email authentication allows our customers to prove they are who they say they are. Using technologies like Sender ID and DomainKeys/DKIM you can protect your reputation and improve the chances of getting delivered.

Smart bounce and complaint handling

We automatically detect different types of bounces and react accordingly. Undeliverable addresses are removed immediately, temporary fails are given additional chances before removal based on best practice.

Best practice built in

We support confirmed opt-in for all susbcriber lists, include a single click unsubscribe link in all campaigns and allow your subscribers to maintain their own subscription through preference centers.

3rd party deliverability monitoring

We use a number of third party tools to monitor our inbox delivery to dozens of the leading ISP’s allowing us to spot potential delivery issues and react immediately. Our team monitors all major blacklists daily.

Reliable, secure server environment

To keep your data safe, secure and always available we use a state-of-the-art redundant server cluster in a fully managed, world class data center. All sensitive data is stored on servers behind a constantly maintained firewall using the same level of encryption as many banks.

The moment your campaign is sent you have access to a range of reports that show you exactly how your subscribers are interacting with it.

See who is opening it, what parts of the campaign they are interested in, who forwarded it on to a friend, unsubscribed, bounced out or even marked it as spam. Sending for clients? Easily give them access to only the reports you send on their behalf.

From big picture to close-up

Our reporting makes it easy to zoom right down to the subscriber level and see a timeline of exactly what they did with your email.

Take this a step further and see your lifetime history with that person. Which campaigns did they open, what links were they interested in, how many times have they forwarded my emails?

All this and more is at your fingertips for every subscriber in your account and is updated in real-time.

Compare campaigns and spot trends

Statistics like open and click rates are useful for each campaign, but it’s when you start comparing results over time the data really shines. By looking at trends, our compare campaigns report makes it easy to see exactly what is and isn’t working in the emails you send.

By comparing stats like opens, clicks, bounces, unsubscribes and even spam complaints, you can quickly see what content your subscribers find relevant, and just as importantly, what they don’t.

Which email clients are they using?

The hardest part about designing emails is making them look great in the dozens of email clients out there. Our email client report makes that a thing of the past by showing exactly which email clients your subscribers are using (see a screenshot of it in action).

When you combine this report with our design and spam testing service, you can generate screenshots of exactly how your design looks in all these email key clients with a single click. Save yourself time and frustration by only focusing on the email clients that matter.

Customize the signup and unsubscribe process for every list

You can create as many different lists as you need for yourself and your clients. You only need to pay when sending a campaign, so list management is free.

Better still, you can completely customize the signup and unsubscribe process for each list. Copy and paste the signup code, set your own landing page for new signups and send your own welcome emails when they confirm their subscription.

Target groups of subscribers and make it personal

You can easily extend your lists to capture anything and everything about your subscribers. Whether it’s address, phone number or favourite lipstick. Not only that, but you can easily personalize your emails with any of the custom data you’ve captured.

Want to get even fancier? You can build segments in your list that target a specific type of subscriber. These can be based on any subscriber demographics you’ve captured as well as past campaign activity, such as only those subscribers that opened the last 3 emails or clicked a specific link.

Room to express yourself

Built with designers in mind, you can create your email designs using your favorite tools and then import them into your account with the click of a mouse. We’ll automatically move all your CSS inline for the best results in email clients like Gmail and Outlook.

We don’t impose any design restrictions, and you won’t find any ugly ‘powered by’ logos or branding either. We hate that stuff!

What you do get is all your campaign images hosted at no additional cost, plenty of design advice and a gallery of inspirational examples to help you create something awesome.

Single click design and spam testing

Testing your design in all the different email clients is the most frustrating part of sending email campaigns. Our design and spam testing tool changes all that by doing the hard work for you.

Send free tests to any address you like, or for a small fee (and a single click) see your email as it appears inover 20 different email clients like Lotus Notes, Hotmail, Outlook 2007 and AOL.

We’ll also run your campaign through popular spam filters at the desktop, server and firewall level before you send it. Read more and see screenshots.

Let your clients send their own emails

We make it easy to send email campaigns for yourself and your clients, but what if your clients want to do the sending themselves? Templates to the rescue.

You can easily turn any email design into a simple, re-usable template your client can add their own content to. Just create a sub-account for them, set a marked-up price, and every time they send, you’ll make a profit! Learn more about reselling.

We’ve even given you a head start with over 30 fully tested email templates you can take and modify for your own needs.
